How would I know if I have breast cancer?
In order to diagnose breast cancer, the following measures are taken:
- Guidelines recommend annual screening mammography annually at age of 45 years and every other year at 55 years onwards.
- The common symptom of breast cancer is lump in the breast which may be noticed while having a shower or during examination by a medical professional. This method is not recommended as a screening tool for breast cancer screening.
- The other symptoms include swelling in arm pit, abnormal nipple discharge, nipple inversion, skin changes like redness, orange peel appearance etc.
In case of any of the above mentioned symptoms please contact a qualified physician.
My doctor recommended me to get hormone therapy for prostate cancer. Why? Are there any side effects associated with it?
I don't know if you know this but, the growth of prostate cancer depends on the hormone. Hormonal therapy is prescribed to inhibit the testosterone formation in the body or to inhibit its interaction with prostate cancer cells. It is called androgen deprivation therapy (ADT). It may be done through oral tablets, injections or surgical removal of testicles. The common side effects include hot flashes, tiredness, bone pain, erectile dysfunction, loss of libido, etc.
Hope this answers your question.

Why do I need a second opinion?
I was diagnosed with lung cancer recently. My family doctor is of the opinion that I should get a second opinion before undergoing the treatment suggested by my oncologist. Why do I need one?
Why do I need a second opinion?
I am so sorry to hear about your diagnosis. Being diagnosed with cancer is never easy, and I understand it must be tough. You must have a lot of questions which need answering. However, one thing I can tell you is that there is nothing wrong in following your doctor's advice and getting a second opinion. Many times, second opinions give a new perspective on a patient’s treatment strategy, as observed in multiple studies. Each patient has a unique disease process and may not fit into the standard clinical situation seen commonly, so a second opinion (essentially a multidisciplinary approach) is a good approach to manage cancer.
